Znalazłem powód, nie jest on zależny od dystrybucji. Jest to wina sterowników NVIDIA. Chyba w wersji 290 przestali wspierać moją kartę (GeForce Go 7300), albo jest to nieoczekiwany błąd. W każdym bądź razie instalacja starszej wersji pozwoliła wystartować serwer X. Co się stało z terminalami? Gdy serwer się nie uruchomił nie mogłem przełączyć się do aktywnej konsoli, pomogło tylko podanie runlevelu (3) jako parametru jądra, by nie uruchamiał X.
