Sugerowałem że być może miałeś dodaną do xorg.conf sekcję: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection U mnie z tą opcją, system przy odpalaniu jakiejkolwiek gierki z akceleracją 3d, wykrzaczał się wydajnościowo oraz wizualnie, objawy były podobne jak u Ciebie więc to zasugerowałem.
